  • JUSTIN CORRISS

    WRITER

Justin X. M. Corriss is a sommelier and writer living in Dover, New Hampshire who has been writing actively since he was in high school. As an adopted person of color, he seeks to explore questions of identity, worldview, belonging, and place through writing, and as a lover of food and drink, he desires an exploration of all the things that make living worthwhile—especially the small moments. He writes and self-publishes fantasy novels, posts the occasional piece of poetry, and has had one short story published in "The Ana"—his first paid work. The small joys of his life are crusty bread, good cheese, clear rivers, delicious wine, pan sauces, and great stories. Skazki was born out of a deep love of history and culture, especially those unfairly maligned and misunderstood due to the past and present influences of totalitarian governments. The original inception for this idea came from reading an article in The Atlantic by modern Russian author Mikhail Shishkin—one which decried the mass censorship and backlash against Russian culture following the invasion of Ukraine by declaring, “Culture, too, is a casualty of war.” After studying history through college and acquiring several collections of Russian and Slavic fairytales and myths, I fell in love with the persistent, occasionally absurdist, and mythically vast cultural presence represented in these stories. First, I wrote a draft of a novel in the spring, and from that text "Deathless" flowed out, and the rest was history. Through these retellings, I hope to highlight the importance of embracing multiple viewpoints, remembering the things we fight for instead of the things we fight against, and the magical moments found in things as mundane as a cup of hot tea.
