BABA YAGA

The powerful and capricious witch in Russian fairytales who lives in the woods. Trapped between the dichotomy of who she is as a person and who she is in legends, Baba Yaga flips back and forth between being a helpful antagonist and an unwilling ally–though she always pursues her own ends. 

KATYA

A poor peasant girl venturing out into the winter woods in search of something to help her family. High teens to early twenties. Although aware of the suffering of the world around her, Katya struggles to remain hopeful and optimistic. While not necessarily naive, Katya tries hard to see the good in people. She believes in the fairy tales she grew up with and accepts that she lives in a magical world. 

IVAN

A soldier with memory loss wandering aimlessly in hopes of finding Baba Yaga and returning home. He is haunted some by his traumatic past, but without his memories he is foolish, fun-loving, and a little too trusting. Despite this, he retains a certain natural cleverness and remembers the stories and songs he was told growing up.

MOROZKO

The Lord of Winter who tests anyone he catches out in the cold. While previously a dedicated deity, he has grown more defensive of his season and, as a result, more bitter about those who dismiss winter’s importance and charm (to the detriment of the other seasons). He also believes the seasonal cycle is responsible for the annual death of his wife, the goddess Morana.

KOSCHEI

The immortal witch of chaos whose primary motivation is simply to entertain himself. While not necessarily more powerful than Baba Yaga, Koschei has lived longer and grown more cynical about the nature of the world. His immortality has made him bored, and he cares little for who actually wins or loses as long as he gets to watch the show and have a good time. 

MOKOS

The patient and understanding goddess of the earth who tempers her husband’s stronger impulses and helps keep the balance between the heavens and the earth. She is the wife of Perun and mother of Morana. 

MORANA

The Goddess of Rebirth and Death, Morozko’s wife, whose disappearance is the cause of his grief.

VELES

The trickster god of the underworld informed by his sense of right and wrong. Willing to give humans a chance, Veles nevertheless takes pride in his own inevitability and is more than a little suspect of those who do not respect the power of death. He is the brother of Perun.

PERUN

The prideful and flashy god of the heavens who oversees the pantheon and dispenses divine intervention. He is the brother of Veles and the husband of Mokos and father to Morana

ALEXEI

A soldier formerly under Ivan’s command–his loyal confidant.

CHERNOBOG

One of the easily amused and playful gods of night and day, light and dark, circles and cycles, along with her twin, Belobog. Chernobog is the more upbeat and playful of the two, always seeing the light. 

BELOBOG

One of the easily amused and playful gods of night and day, light and dark, circles and cycles, along with her twin, Chernobog. Belobog remains more grounded and understanding, willing to confront the darkness in gods and men alike.
